The challenge
The task: strengthen the foundation of an existing retaining wall at the Jerusalem Light Rail depot. In other words, work beneath a wall that was already standing, rather than build a new one from scratch. There was unstable rock on site, and we trimmed it back carefully. We strengthened the wall with rock bolts and a sprayed concrete wall, and clad it in sawn and dressed stone. The new sprayed wall is up to 5 m high. We worked as a subcontractor to the main contractor on site. The work had four components: careful rock trimming, rock bolts, a sprayed concrete wall reinforced with 6.4 tonnes of steel mesh, and stone cladding.
What we did
- Careful trimming of unstable rock50 m³
- Drilling and grouting of 77 galvanised rock bolts, 25 mm diameter, each 10 m long770 m
- B30 sprayed concrete retaining wall, up to 5 m high216 m³
- Steel reinforcing mesh6.4 t
- Sawn and dressed stone cladding on the wall316 m²
What sets it apart
All 77 bolts were drilled and grouted in about five weeks, between 17 September and 22 October 2019, and logged in a grouting record. 77 bolts at 10 m each add up to 770 m of drilling in rock.
