The challenge

The neighbourhood's access road was built on a high fill embankment. The site served as a receiving site approved by the Jerusalem Municipality's Environmental Quality Department: surplus excavation from other projects in the city, among them the Eden compound and Heichal Shlomo, was brought here and became fill. In all, we placed more than 300,000 m³ of fill from imported and recycled local material. On the same project we excavated and cut approx. 159,000 m³. We reinforced the fill embankment with geotextile and geogrid, and along the alignment we built retaining walls and reinforced-earth walls up to 8 m high.

What we did

  • Excavation, rock cutting and removal of surplus158,882 m³
  • Imported fill to the soil consultant's requirements254,804 m³, alongside fill from recycled local material
  • Reinforcing membranes in the fill embankment: geotextile84,400 m²; geogrid — 21,145 m²
  • Reinforced concrete retaining walls1,337 m³, plus an "Ofir" retaining wall — 156 m³
  • Reinforced-earth walls up to 8 m high2,144 m²
  • Shoring: 32 mm rock boltsapprox. 2,350 m; shotcrete — 287 m³; micropiles — 896 m
  • Rockeries (boulder walls) of natural rock2,191 m²
  • Reinforced concrete drainage pipes276 m; removal of 499 trees

According to the letter from Sanhedria HaMurchevet Ltd., we also carried out foundations and footings, courtyard development, electrical and lighting works, sewage, water and drainage infrastructure, and carriageway overlay.

What sets it apart

Surplus excavation from other Jerusalem projects was not sent to landfill but became the road embankment here, with the authority's approval. And on the project itself, three stabilisation methods: reinforced concrete walls, reinforced-earth walls, and shoring with rock bolts and shotcrete. The project was managed by Ehud Tayar Management & Engineering.

Responding to the complexity of the project, with strict adherence to the project's schedules and objectives, and in full and continuous coordination with the management team.
